Notes
Andy(he/him) is a storyteller drawn to themes of Identity, Grief, Love and Loneliness, particularly when they feature within the emotional landscape of men/masculinity. Complimenting his acting career, his work as a producer, screenwriter and drag artist provide creative and alternative avenues for the exploration of these themes. He is inspired by the queer lens and it's ability to subvert, interrogate and reveal hidden truth within a subject.
On stage and on screen, Andy finds his stride in the anti-hero, delving into the complex interiority of the 'everyday guy' with streaks of inner darkness: "Andy Johnston‘s physical, connected performance as Ben is emotional, and often chilling. Taking on the character with perhaps the biggest arc in the piece, his journey from confident to vulnerable, and all states in between, is very moving, and performed with considerable tenacity." - Theatre Press, 2022
Growing up queer in a small country town in regional NSW was an experience that left Andy with a significant amount of grit and fortitude which compliments his sensitivity and emotional maturity. All the while his goofy sense of humour and quick wit bubble just under the surface. Beyond acting Andy is passionate about helping others tell their stories through empowerment and education.
Inspired by the queer lens, psychology, history, the natural world, nature, dystopia, love, the human condition, magic and hope amidst adversity. When he is not acting Andy is always in search of good food, good music and good vibes.
