Training & Additional Notes

TEMUERA MORRISON, of Te Arawa and Ngati Maniapoto descent, is one of New Zealand’s foremost actors, with a career in Hollywood as well as in New Zealand.

2015 is proving a busy year for Tem. He also stars in Lee Tamahore’s Mahana (previously The Patriarch) playing the lead role of Tamihana Mahana in a tale of family rivalry and reconciliation from the author of Whale Rider; features in the BBC mini-series Tatau, and voiced a lead character in the upcoming Disney animated feature Moana, an epic tale set in the Pacific.

He has also voiced a lead character in animated NZ series The Barefoot Bandits.

Other recent film roles include playing Papa to Stan Walker in Mt Zion, Dr Hemi Crane in the New Zealand comedy-horror Fresh Meat, the lead role of Kereama in Tracker, the NZ/UK co- production filmed in New Zealand and Scorpion King 3: Battle For Redemption. He also played Doctore in the Starz US television series Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.

His 2013 reality television debut in The Life and Times of Temuera Morrison, won a large and supportive local audience with his humour and candour. In 2014 he hosted an old-style variety show called Happy Hour. Another first was the release of his first album, reflecting Tem’s lifelong involvement with music and Maori entertainment.

He played Abin Sur in Green Lantern, with director Martin Campbell, with whom he last worked on Vertical Limit (2000). His other Hollywood films include Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, which followed his role as Jango Fett in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones; The Marine 2, Couples Retreat, Speed 2: Cruise Control, From Dusk Til Dawn 3, Barb Wire, Six Days Seven Nights and The Island of Dr Moreau.

Morrison’s breakthrough was his award-winning performance as Jake Heke in Lee Tamahori’s Once Were Warriors, a role he also played in the sequel, What Becomes of the Broken-Hearted, directed by Ian Mune.
Other New Zealand films include River Queen and Rain of the Children, both with director/writer Vincent Ward; Crooked Earth, directed by Sam Pillsbury, and Geoff Murphy’s Never Say Die. His first well-known character was Dr Ropata in the highly popular soap opera Shortland Street, to which he made a surprise guest-role return in 2008.
