THEATRE REVIEW: Heads and Tales, The Butterfly Club (Melbourne)
by Bill Morley
Wednesday, June 11, 2008
Heads and Tales introduces some new talent to the vibrant Melbourne cabaret scene. It brings together four recent graduates of the National Theatre Drama course, of varying backgrounds, to tell their stories.
The limited performance space in The Butterfly Club puts the focus squarely on the the performer. The deeply personal nature of the material that comprises this show places a further demand on the performer with the open and vulnerable position they must assume to achieve an ultimate connection with their audience.
Each of the four performers is to be congratulated for their courage in this respect. A raw honesty and deep sincerity blazes forth from the stage as they each tell their story. There is something in each story to which the audience can connect and which makes the show both funny and poignant, open yet intriguing and, most importantly, real. It highlights the simple truth that each and every person has a tale to tell.
James Taylor rounds off this line-up with a deeply heartfelt and sincere tale. Affable, charming and endearing to his audience, James illustrates the deeper workings of the mind of your so-called 'everyday-sort-of-bloke' and that search within us all for both increased self-awareness and the place of that self within the world.
The Butterfly Club has once again been responsible for providing Melbourne with four new exciting up-and-coming performers. For an experience that will make you both laugh and cry, you are urged not to miss out on this very special experience. Wishing all four performers a well-deserved successful season!
